I use a holistic and student-centered approach to advising students. There are a lot of contributing factors that determine a student’s academic success. As an advisor, we need to work with the students to figure out the challenges to their success and then problem-solve on how to overcome those challenges.
I’m going to rephrase this question to the following: “Who inspired me to pursue a career in education?” The answer is my sister, Jemmalyn Peralta. She used to be a high school math teacher, but now, she is an assistant principal. She taught me everything I know about being a mentor, a teacher, and a warrior for education.
I enjoy listening to students’ excitement about the classes they are taking and what they plan to do with their lives. It feels great knowing that I am part of their journey to success.
My favorite part of the job is leaving work and feeling satisfied knowing that I met with all the students I needed to meet, chit-chatted with all the cool advisors, and completed all my tasks for the day. :)
EA 105: Romantic Core Values in East Asian Premodern Literature and Contemporary Film. I basically got to watch K-dramas and talk about romance and why two people can't be together. This course actually inspired some of the literature courses I taught at SFSU.
By day, I am an academic advisor. By night, I am an anime and manga freelance writer for Comic Book Resources (CBR). You can “Google” me.
